The Mom’s Bible--ignore the slightly cheesy name–is set up to be an encouragement for mamma’s everywhere. Using the NCV version, it’s easy to read. With notes and snippets written by a team of mammas.–mostly related mammas, but mamma’s none the less.–The main note writer is Bobbie Wolgemuth, her daughter added some little notes here and there, and to make things a little more sentimental and fun, verses that grandma loved are highlighted through out the bible.
As a warning, I should say, I’m not a flowery girly person. My idea of a good time is not celebrating girlhood through flowery things and lots of hugs. So taking on this bible to review I thought would be a challenge to me. I figured it would be filled with things like “YAY! We’re MOM’S!” and pictures of puppies in a field of flowers. You can imagine my surprise when I recieved the bible not to see puppies on the cover but instead a fancy gradient crimson red. The inside page edges are covered in a classic, vintage feel design in brown. No, fields of flowers. phew. Not annoyingly girly as I originally expected.
At first glance through the bible, reading the introductions and explainations, both my expectations were right in the cheesy mom’s good time kind of way but there was also enough decent stuff to make me read more. Particularly, I was interested in the Wonderful Counselor snippets, these are thoughts from a christian therapist on tough issues. I appreciate the attempts to take on some tough issues that especially moms face.–these things I can admit. Funny how we mamma’s are, some things strike a cord with us all. The same worries and fears about our littles.
Also, I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m willing to say it again. I really love the highlighted verses, or rather the “first touch” verses. They’re verses that the main writer, Bobbie’s ninety-two year old mother-in-law, has love and cherished all these years. It’s a delightful surprise to run across a highlighted verse thinking of the reasons she may have loved it, and taking that extra moment to think through what it can mean to me.
How I would use this bible:
Part of the ministry here at HeBrews is a single women’s ministry. Sometimes single women include mamma’s or mamma’s to be. A lot of times those mamma’s or mamma’s to be are desperately in need of some kind of encouragement as a parent. They need someone to walk them through parenting.--who doesn’t?! being a mama can be one of the most terrifying life changes ever, let alone being single–The Mom’s Bible provides comfort and strength that I feel would be especially good for these mamma’s. In addition to the comfort and strength that is already found in the bible, this bible hits every area of a mamma’s life where the extra support is needed.
One thing I’m not a huge fan of--don’t worry, it’s not lack of girly-ness–I’m not a fan of the New Century Version of the bible. Though it’s easy to read which make’s The Mom’s bible easy to comprehend for new believers and new mother’s as well, the translation itself is weak. In the translators attempts to make the bible easy to read they made some words a little more watered down, taking away from the original text. There are plenty of other versions of the bible out there that are both easy to comprehend for today’s language and also more accurate the usage.
Overall, I enjoy the Mom’s Bible. I enjoy the slightly girly atmosphere the note takers portray, with out going overboard. I enjoyed the various snippets that took a clear look from a mamma’s perspective, touching in areas any mamma can appreciate. I look forward to sharing this bible with the single mamma’s that find their way through HeBrews.
