*This post was written sometime on the road in the last few weeks. I’m so on top of things it hurts.

Currently? I’m somewhere past Green Bay, Wisconsin and between the lands of civilization we call Milwaukee and beyond. I would try to sleep, but there is the most disturbing conversation going on that I just can’t shut out of my mind.–is McCafe (McDonald’s) coffee worthy of our money?
Obviously, the answer is no. But there are some who think that this is actually a possibility. “At least they use whole beans†“It’s a little sweet†“Kind of tastes like candyâ€Â Come now, let’s be logical. If McDonald’s adds seaweed and “real burger†scent to their specialty the hamburger, you can bet their side project–the specialty coffee–isn’t going to be so swell.
What’s so tricky in the McCafe Specialty coffee experience is that, they can muster a conversation on whether it is actually good or not. The fully automatic machines that McCafe use are popping up everywhere, and if your local barista is bad enough, you can’t even tell the difference between the two!
To the purist–OUTRAGE.
ahem. That’s just me.
Have you heard of the clover? Pop, $10,000 out and you too can have a beautiful automated machine working like your own home barista. These guys trick you into this automated system of coffee enough, that Starbuckspurchased the patent to the product.
Are the purist day’s off specialty coffee coming to an end? Or are we looking at the more elite days of the purist barista’s thriving in the little hole-in-the-wall shops? Something is beginning to seem all to equilibrium to me…
Give me my barista brewed coffee, from the roaster who has spent days in his beans getting his roast just right. Â I think somewhere in there coffee goes beyond the automated machine, and I realize that it’s the not just the system of brewing that makes coffee so great, it’s the relationship involved.

Nothing beats a good barista! But at 5:30 a.m. on my way to work when only the golden arches are lighted, nothing beats Mcdonalds coffee either.

So…someone was telling me that the MAC barista training class was kinda a waste of money/time because I could just get a job at starbucks and learn the same thing while getting paid for it…yeah then I thought of this post here…and laughed and walked away
Oh merciful heavens, NO. never a cup of McD’s. never I say!!
Sarahs last blog post..a very happy fake birthday
ha ha! exactly. that’s exactly it.
I am in agreement with you! I flipped out when I went to a local MdDonald’s a year or so ago and saw that it had espresso and a piano to attract our crowd. No, no, no! Having once been a barista myself–I have standards! Corporate McDonald’s has done enough damage. (Have you read Fast Food Nation?). I miss the local coffee shops. Thanks for your post.
